About Us

Concrete Harbor Magazine is a quarterly online literary magazine that publishes original work by students aged 11–22. We offer a rare opportunity for young artists to be featured in a high-quality magazine and introduced to a large widespread audience.

Submissions are competitive—we aim to spotlight the very best work from emerging creatives with something urgent to say. We do encourage simultaneous submissions to other publications. This increases your chances of being published, and your voice deserves every opportunity to be heard.

Submission Guidelines

We seek work that responds to the world—this can look like anything from grappling with personal turning points to confronting broader societal challenges. We do, however, especially encourage submissions that engage with current events and social issues. Do send us work that’s weird and bold. We want to be moved, challenged, and surprised.

  • We only accept original, previously unpublished work.

  • If selected, we require First Serial Rights, and after publication, all rights revert back to the creator. We do ask that Concrete Harbor Magazine is credited in any subsequent republication.

  • If submitting simultaneously, please email us if your work is accepted elsewhere.

  • Due to the high volume of submissions, our response time may take a while. Feel free to query if you haven’t heard back after four weeks.

  • All submissions are read anonymously, and we offer general comments on every piece we receive.

  • Submissions that do not follow our rules will be disqualified.

Art:

We accept both 2D and 3D visual art. You may submit up to five pieces per submission.

Please submit a well-lit, high-resolution PNG file of your work. Portrait orientation is generally preferred for 2D works, but not required. Include the title in the file name, but do not include your name on the artwork itself or in the file name, as all submissions are reviewed anonymously.

When photographing your work, take your photo near a window and try to keep the lighting even. Avoid glare or shadows, and hold your camera parallel to the piece to prevent distortion. Most modern phones will be sufficient—just make sure the image is clear and in focus. Do make sure your piece fills the frame as much as possible.

For performance art (dance, music, theater, etc.), photo galleries, or film, please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We’ll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work. Artists selected for publication will receive $20 per piece.

We accept all forms of English-language poetry, and we especially welcome experimental, and genre-blurring work. There is no line limit, and you may submit up to five poems per submission.

Each poem should be uploaded as a separate PDF, with 12-point Times New Roman font and double spacing. Include the title and genre in the file name, and on the top of the document. Do not include your name within the document or in the file name, as all submissions are reviewed anonymously.

If you would like to submit a themed collection, please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We’ll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work. Poets selected for publication will receive $10 per poem.

Poetry:

We accept flash fiction, short stories, memoirs, and journalism. You may submit up to three pieces per submission. Follow the same formatting file guidelines as poetry.

Flash fiction should not exceed 750 words. Short stories must range from 750 to 3,500 words. Memoirs may be up to 2,000 words.

Journalism submissions may be up to 4,000 words, and any interview transcripts are required at the bottom of the document. We encourage in-depth coverage, and if word count is a concern for journalism submissions, please email us.

If you would like to submit another form of prose (critical essay, drama, translation, etc.), please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We’ll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work. Writers selected for flash fiction will receive $10. All other prose contributors will receive $20.
